【読解・文法のコツ】
１．as expected：予想されたように
ex. As expected, Vladimir Putin won...
＊as it was expected「（後述する）それは予想されたように」 の略と捉える
cf. 「when, if など含む文で主語が同じでbe動詞がある時、両方を一括省略できる」と同じ
ex: While (I was) walking down the street, I met an old friend of mine.
２．although, but, however の違い
ex. Mr Putin got 64%, although there were widespread reports...
(1) although は when, if の仲間：従位［属］接続詞
ex. Although he is poor, he is happy.
(He is happy, although he is poor. でもよい)
＊力点は he is happy
(2) but は and, or の仲間：等位接続詞
ex. He is poor, but he is happy.
＊力点は he is poor, he is happy 同等
(3) however は therefore, meanwhile の仲間：副詞
ex. He is poor. However, he is happy.
(He is poor; however... でもよい)
＊一旦、文の流れが切れる
３．～の１日後：one[a] day after ~
ex. ...people took part in a demonstration a day after the election.
（× after one day ~）
cf. Since last year...regulator has taken...
ex. ...people took part in a demonstration a day after the election was held.
